Conference looks at water disasters Oct 19th, 2001

A three-day international conference on alternatives for preventing or controlling water related disasters such as floods or droughts is being held at Western.

The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, along with several partners such as UNESCO and Environment Canada, is hosting the event to identify how non-structural measures can improve society’s capacity to anticipate, mitigate, withstand and recover from water-related problems.

The sessions are being held at Spencer Hall Conference Centre Oct. 18-20.

“This event is one of the first that acknowledges that effective water resources management impact many disciplines. As a result, we have lawyers, economists, engineers and social and natural scientists here,” says Slobodan Simonovic, conference organizer and Research Chair for the ICLR.
